Fistula Foundation
We are demonstrating to the world that a new approach to women’s health can change the trajectory of women’s lives and have a profound impact on local communities. An estimated one million women in Africa and Asia suffer from obstetric fistula, a debilitating childbirth injury that leaves a woman incontinent and, as a result, too often abandoned by her family and shunned by her community. Surgery is the only cure, which we deliver through partners in 30 countries across Africa and Asia. Since 2009, we have provided more than 85,000 free, life-transforming surgeries to women in need.
Fistula Foundation combines the dynamism of a lean startup with the stability of a mature organization. Each year since 2006, we’ve received the highest rating from every nonprofit sector watchdog group. Charity Watch lists us as one of only 34 Top Rated International Organizations, and GuideStar has awarded us Platinum Participant status—the highest designation available to charities. We have also earned the recognition of leaders such as Pulitzer Prize winner Nicholas Kristof, Grammy winner Paul Simon, and internationally renowned ethicist Peter Singer.
The Opportunity
If you are a rising professional with exceptional storytelling skills, and with an interest in supporting a powerful nonprofit mission, then Fistula Foundation offers a chance to excel in a role that lets you develop content across a range of mediums (print, digital, social, video). Over many years, we have increased our revenue at a higher rate than the nonprofit sector average, and our ability to craft heartfelt and engaging donor communications has been vital to our success in this area. As Communications Associate, you would support our marketing and communication work by creating content for multiple print and digital projects, and managing the cataloging of image and story assets. You would also provide administrative and social media support on an as-needed basis.
In this role, you would report to the Director of Communications, and work with colleagues across the organization to develop communication materials.
Responsibilities
The new Marketing and Communication Associate will:
- Craft engaging stories across mediums (print, digital, social, and video) that communicate the mission and impact of Fistula Foundation to donors, advocates, and partners.
- Collaborate with communication team colleagues in posting on and updating website, social media, and email marketing content.
- Manage the uploading and cataloging of image and story assets that come in from the field.
- Provide administrative support to communication and donor relation teams as needed.
- Collaborate with colleagues in philanthropy, fundraising operations, and communication roles to develop and improve efforts to reach and retain donors.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate for this position will have some (but not necessarily all) of the following:
- Bachelor’s degree, with a degree in journalism, communications, or creative writing preferred
- 2+ years as a content marketer or professional writer. Previous experience working at nonprofits and creative agencies strongly preferred.
- Previous experience writing fundraising-related communication, such as giving campaigns across email, web, and personal asks.
- Excellent writing and editing skills with superior communication abilities.
- Basic SEO understanding and experience creating content for the web.
- Familiarity with using Adobe Creative Suite applications (such as Photoshop and Illustrator) and other graphic tools (such as Canva) to develop and edit digital images for web, social media, or other use cases.
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to adapt to new conditions, assignments, and deadlines; quick turnaround on key projects is essential for success.
- Integrity, humility, optimism, a sense of humor and a strong work ethic.
- A collaborative outlook and an eagerness to learn from colleagues; a capacity for adapting quickly to new conditions, new assignments, and new deadlines; and a willingness to pitch in with tasks large and small.
- A strong interest in advancing a cause related to women’s health, international development, or global poverty alleviation.
