Forced to travel to three separate facilities while in labor, her emergency C-section came too late—and she developed fistula. For two years, her body leaked uncontrollably. Her husband left. Her family abandoned her. Believing her condition was untreatable, she lost all hope.
“I felt it would be better to leave this world than to live with this condition,” she said.
At last, she found a doctor who connected her to Fistula Foundation’s partner ARENA—the only dedicated fistula care facility in Burkina Faso, West Africa. When Abibata learned they could treat her, she cried tears of joy.
