The Republic of the Congo is a highly urbanized country that has made significant strides in maternal health, but still has a long way to go to eliminate the burden of obstetric fistula.

Why We Work In The Republic of the Congo:

The Republic of the Congo, also referred to as Congo-Brazzaville, has a largely urban population with a high dependency on oil exports as a source of income. This economic dependence, in tandem with a long history of political corruption, has left healthcare in the Congo in a fragile state. 

Although the maternal mortality rate has dropped by more than 50% over the past 25 years, access to obstetric care remains limited. Many health facilities lack essential equipment and trained staff, while high costs and transportation challenges prevent countless women—especially in emergencies—from receiving the care they need.
