At age 15, Lydia lost the inner light that used to make her radiant. She became enveloped in the stench of incontinence and in a deep sense of shame. A radio announcement that offered free fistula care changed everything.
A 48-hour childbirth had stolen her health and radiance. Without access to high-quality, emergency obstetric care, she lost her child and developed fistula. She lived with this miserable condition for the next 11 years of her life. The uncontrollable leaking stopped her from doing the things that made her feel valued, like rearing pigs and chickens to support her family. When she heard the radio advertisement about free fistula care, a glimmer of hope revealed itself.
Thanks to generous donors like you, Lydia was treated for free at our partner Surgical Centre Mbarara. She is forever grateful to those who supported her treatment, and is looking forward to spreading awareness of fistula so that no woman suffers as long as she did.
“I am looking forward to getting back to my farming projects. I am also going to educate other women about the causes of fistula and mobilize women [who have fistula] to come for the free services at the Surgical Centre Mbarara.”—Lydia, a fistula survivor
