Today is International Day to End Obstetric Fistula (IDEOF)—a day inaugurated by the United Nations and held every year on May 23 to raise awareness about obstetric fistula—a devastating childbirth injury that afflicts some of the most vulnerable women in the world. Partners and team members from each of our Fistula Foundation Treatment Networks spent the day creating buzz about fistula in their respective communities. The day was commemorated with speeches, radio announcements, and joyous parades.
Through IDEOF celebrations, our partners were able to reach more women with fistula and to empower more communities with critical information about this condition. In effect, these events—and similar events held throughout the year—make your support go further.
Below are some of the highlights of IDEOF:
Democratic Republic of Congo
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, partners raised awareness through training sessions and radio announcements. At a larger ceremony, local leaders shared their commitment to ending fistula.
Kenya
In Kisii County, Kenya, key stakeholders attended celebrations in the fight against obstetric fistula, including the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), MPESA Foundation, Fistula Foundation, and other partners. Their presence highlighted a united front in tackling the medical and social challenges associated with fistula.
Tanzania
In Tanzania, IDEOF national celebrations were held at our new partner Mbeya Hospital. The event was preceded by 15 successful surgeries conducted collaboratively by Mbeya Hospital surgeons and Dr. James Chapa, as part of ongoing capacity-building initiatives.
