Dr. Justin Paluku Lussy has dedicated his career to helping women in his home country, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). He started as a resident-in-training at HEAL Africa, our partner in eastern DRC. Today, he serves as the hospital’s CEO.
Under his leadership, HEAL Africa has grown to become the best hospital in its region. In 2017, generous Fistula Foundation donors like you gave to build a new, dedicated fistula ward at HEAL’s main facility in Goma. Dr. Justin also leads a medical mobile team, which makes the dangerous journey to remote provinces in DRC to help women who are not able to travel to the main hospital for treatment. Without Dr. Justin and his team, these isolated women would likely be forced to suffer with fistula for the rest of their lives.
“These women [with fistula] are miserable, living without any hope to ‘become woman again.’ When we talk to them, they feel they are no longer human beings… It is really a blessing for us to be among the few gynecologists in the DRC who dedicate most of their time to take care of fistula patients.”
