In Conversation With Expert Fistula Surgeon and Women’s Rights Advocate Dr. Shershah Syed

On March 4th, 2021, Fistula Foundation’s supporters had a unique opportunity to hear directly from one of our trusted partners on the ground. Dr. Shershah Syed, visionary leader of the Pakistan National Forum on Women’s Health (PNFWH), joined us from his office in Karachi for a special livestream event to discuss his vital work helping women in Pakistan. The conversation was led by Kate Grant, Fistula Foundation’s CEO, and Lindsey Pollaczek, VP of Programs.

Over the course of the hour-long event, Dr. Shershah outlined the unique barriers that women in Pakistan face to accessing fistula care, and the root causes of this terrible condition in his home country—including what he describes as “the low status of women and girls” in Pakistani society. He also described what he and his team of experts are doing to help, from robust community outreach in poor, rural areas of the country, to surgeon and nurse training, to advocacy for fistula survivors at a government level.

Fistula Foundation has been proud to partner with Dr. Shershah and the PNFWH to provide fistula surgeries since 2017. Your generous donations make this partnership possible—and together, we are transforming the lives of hundreds of Pakistani women each year.
