Since 2013, Fistula Foundation has occasionally selected deserving individuals to receive the Allan Rosenfield Award, named for the late Dr. Allan Rosenfield, who served on the Fistula Foundation Board of Directors for five years. Dr. Rosenfield finished his career as dean of Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, and was renowned for his myriad contributions as a leader in the field of women’s health.

In a tribute to the late doctor, The New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof wrote of Rosenfield, “Allan argued passionately that maternal mortality was a human rights issue, and that governments had to be held accountable when they allowed women to die in vast numbers in childbirth, simply because they were poor, rural, and female.”
