Dr. Steve Arrowsmith

Dr. Steve Arrowsmith joined Fistula Foundation as a medical advisor in 2010. A urologist by training, he has dedicated his career to providing care for women with fistula across Africa and Asia.

He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio. For 35 years, Steve has treated women with fistula throughout Africa and Asia. Over that period, he has helped establish three fistula centers in Africa, performed surgical repairs in 17 countries, and mentored dozens of fistula surgeons.

Steve’s contributions extend beyond surgical practice. He served as a co-investigator for a World Health Organization clinical trial on catheter management after fistula repair. Additionally, he authored “Obstetric Fistula & Other Forms of Female Genital Fistula,” a seminal work published by the United Nations Population Fund and the Campaign to End Fistula. His academic contributions include numerous articles and textbook chapters on fistula repair.

Despite his remarkable achievements, Steve humbly acknowledges the women with fistula as his most important mentors, drawing profound lessons and strength from their experiences.

As a medical advisor for Fistula Foundation, Steve plays a crucial role in guiding and developing content for targeted surgeon webinar trainings. He also provides his expertise to support other training initiatives.
