Meet Pushpa from Nepal

Pushpa is approximately 50 years old and from a remote village in western Nepal. When she arrived at Kathmandu Model Hospital, she was leaking urine and feces uncontrollably and was severely depressed.

Pushpa comes from a poor family and was married off at age 15. She went through several pregnancies, and today has two living children. It was her last pregnancy seven years ago, however, that took a devastating toll on her body. Pushpa labored at home for two days with no skilled birth attendant to help her. Her labor was obstructed and the baby did not survive. Several days later, she began leaking.

The community began to shun her and Pushpa fell into a deep depression. She confined herself to a dark room in her house most of the time and isolated herself both socially and emotionally from the world around her. She even visited several hospitals for treatment, but unfortunately her fistula was never properly diagnosed.

Finally, Pushpa found hope at Kathmandu Model Hospital. Doctors there diagnosed her as having a recto-vaginal fistula, and were able to perform a successful repair surgery. With physical healing came emotional healing, and we are happy to report that Pushpa has regained her happiness along with her continence!
